Why Your AC is Blowing Hot Air in Your San Antonio Home

When your A/C is blowing hot air into your San Antonio home, you are sure to seek the cause so the situation can be resolved quickly. Check out some common problems that cause your A/C to blow hot air and look into whether you can troubleshoot the issue or if it may be time to call an HVAC professional.

Thermostat Setting

The fast and simple fix, which you may have already checked, is the thermostat. Check once more to make sure the thermostat is positioned in the “cool” mode and adjusted under room temperature. Also, check the wiring in the thermostat to confirm the wires are securely fastened to the terminals.

Condenser Coil

The condenser coil can be found in the outdoor unit of a split-system A/C. If the condenser is clogged with dirty, heat exchange can be blocked. Shut off power to your unit at the disconnect plug, and then spray the unit’s sides with a foaming coil cleaner, followed by a good spray with a garden hose. Continue to spray the entire unit until it’s totally clean.

Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil is placed on top of the furnace in an upflow system. You might have to remove some panels to access this evaporator. If there is ice accumulation on the evaporator, put the A/C to “fan” mode or turn the furnace on. Doing either can help melt the ice. Before doing this though, check the air filter for dirt and change it if it’s dirty. Poor airflow across the evaporator creates this kind of ice buildup. Also, use the foaming coil cleaner to clean the evaporator. If ice returns then call your technician.

There are other reasons why ice builds up, such as an electrical problem or an incorrect refrigerant charge. Your HVAC tech will need to handle those issues.

Compressor Problems

When you’ve cleaned the condenser coil, you’ve also cleaned the compressor, which helps prevent overheating. However, if you hear humming, grinding or rattling coming from the outdoor unit, turn off the A/C and call your technician.
